Wynn Makes Pitch for
Maryland Casino

BALTIMORE, MD – Las Vegas casino king Steve Wynn recently journeyed to Annapolis to meet with top legislative leaders and express his interest in expanding his gambling empire to Maryland.

Wynn, chairman of Wynn Resorts and former head of Mirage Resorts Inc., visited the State House last week and met with the president of the Maryland Senate, the prospective speaker of the House of Delegates and at least one committee chairman. He also sought an audience with Gov.-elect Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., but was politely rebuffed, an aide said.

Legislators said Wynn inquired about efforts to legalize slot machine gambling in Maryland and made clear that he'd like to become a major local player in the business.

“In his visit to Annapolis, Wynn talked about building 'a major entertainment, horse-racing slot-machine emporium’ at one of Maryland's existing racetracks or possibly at a tourist destination," said Del. Howard P. Rawlings, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee and a slots supporter.

At one time the highest-paid executive in the nation, Wynn is credited with remaking Las Vegas into a destination not just for gamblers but for
upscale vacationers.

Delaware Racinos, Gamblers Adjust to Smoking Ban -
WILIMINGTON, DE – Delaware gamblers can no longer smoke while playing slots at the three Delaware racetracks, prompting the tracks to accommodate smokers as best they can.

"We have locations adjacent to the facilities that they can walk into. We have tables, chairs and ashtrays set up for them," said William Fasy, chief operating officer of Delaware Park, the state's highest-grossing racino.

A statewide ban on smoking in public buildings and workplaces took effect the day before Thanksgiving. Racino operators are understandably worried about losing customers. "My gut feeling is that it's going to be a negative effect," said Fasy, who doesn't smoke. "Still," Fasy said, "I haven't seen drastic change in two days."
