Edmonton Casino Owners Plan Move & Expansion

ALBERTA, CANADA – The only casino in downtown Edmonton, Alberta could soon be a lot bigger.

Gateway Casinos, the new owner of the Baccarat Casino, said on Feb. 13 that it wants to move out of the rather garish building at the corner of 101 Street and 104 Avenue into a new $30-million facility rivaling the city's other three casinos in size.

The Baccarat Casino opened its doors to gamblers in 1996. Gateway Casinos, which operates several casinos in Vancouver and the Palace Casino at West Edmonton Mall, bought the building and the 4.5-hectares of surrounding land
last June.

But before Baccarat Casino can nearly triple from 3,600 square meters to 9,290 square meters, Gateway needs the blessing of two different government bodies: the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission and city council.

Gateway would also have to get zoning approval. The Baccarat property is zoned to allow a casino, but under a very strict set of guidelines that requires any change to be approved by council.

Argosy Installs Token-Free Slots - CINCINNATI, OH – For casino-goers tired of lugging around those pesky buckets loaded with tokens, Argosy Casino & Hotel in Lawrenceburg said it now has 500 token-free slot machines in operation.

The new slots operate on a system called "Ticket In Ticket Out," in which winnings are printed out on tickets, eliminating the need for tokens. The tickets can be used as a credit on another machine or can be redeemed by cashiers at the riverboat casino.
