North Carolina Bill
Proposes Vegas Style Gambling -
RALEIGH, NC - Harrah's
Cherokee Casino in Cherokee could offer Las Vegas-style
gambling if recently proposed legislation passes the N.C.
General Assembly. Rep. Bill Owens, D-Pasquotank, introduced
a bill last week that would allow nonprofits to offer
"casino nights" to raise money.
Under
the proposed legislation, participants could play games
such as roulette, blackjack and poker. Slot machines would
be prohibited. The convergence of the proposed state law
and a federal law, called the National Indian Gaming Regulatory
Act, could pave the way for Vegas-style gambling in the
Cherokee casinos. Representatives from some local nonprofits
said they would welcome the opportunity to have a new
fund-raising tool.
Vegas Hotel-Casino
Opens Tribute to Victims of Sept. 11 Attacks
- LAS VEGAS - The New
York-New York Casino on the Las Vegas Strip has quietly
unveiled a memorial to victims of the World Trade Center
and Pentagon terrorist attacks.
The
display consists of a granite wall with 20 recessed boxes
of mementos such as an American flag. In between, brass
plates display quotations from inspirational figures such
as Eleanor Roosevelt, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nelson Mandela.
The
casino preserved items left on a fence in front of a replica
of a Statue of Liberty and a New York City fireboat almost
immediately after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. As the
collection grew, resort owner MGM Mirage said it was faced
with designing a memorial.
The
hotel plans no fanfare for the memorial, which is free
to the public and located on the Strip sidewalk, to avoid
the appearance of self-promotion.
