Las Vegas Plans Hawaiian Marketplace

LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas already has a Paris, New York and Venice. Now a development partnership plans to re-create Waikiki's International Market Place on The Strip. The 80,000-square-foot complex on 2.4 acres also will feature kiosks, retail stalls, restaurants and free entertainment with Polynesian flair.

Complete with a faux banyan tree and climate-controlled outdoor setting, the $140 million "Hawaiian Marketplace" recently started construction and is expected to open in November between the Aladdin and MGM Grand hotel casinos next to the Polo Towers time-share.

Joseph S. North, a former retail consultant in Honolulu now with real estate firm Colliers International in Las Vegas, said he rather doubts Metroflag can re-create the dense jungle-like feel of Waikiki's International Market Place jammed with artisans, merchants and tourists.

North said Las Vegas visitor demographics have changed since Sept. 11, with more domestic visitors from California who are largely value-oriented shoppers.

The project replaces a shopping center formerly known as Polo Plaza or Metro Plaza that struggled over the years, according to George Connor, a Colliers senior vice president of retail properties.

Isle of Capri Casinos to Operate Bahamas Casino - BILOXI, MS - Isle of Capri Casinos, Inc. officials announced on May 16th that it has reached an agreement in principle to lease and operate an Isle of Capri Casino at Our Lucaya Beach and Golf Resort in Freeport, Grand Bahamas. The project is subject to various conditions including, without limitation execution of a definitive agreement and governmental and regulatory approvals.

Isle of Capri Casinos, Inc. owns and operates 15 riverboat, dockside and land-based casinos at 14 locations, including Biloxi, Vicksburg, Lula and Natchez, Mississippi; Bossier City and Lake Charles (two riverboats), Louisiana; Black Hawk (two land-based casinos) and Cripple Creek, Colorado; Bettendorf, Davenport and Marquette, Iowa; and Kansas City and Boonville, Missouri. The company also operates Pompano Park Harness Racing Track in Pompano
Beach, Florida.

Peppermill Plans New Reno Complex - RENO, NV – The owners of the Peppermill Hotel-Casino plan to build a $55 million entertainment center with a casino and theater complex in south Reno. The Peppermill is negotiating to buy the more than 10 acres of vacant lot for the project near U.S. Highway 395 at Longley Lane and South Virginia Street.

New Orleans Track Eyes Slots - BATON ROUGE, LA – Slot machines could be added at New Orleans' horse racing track if the full House agrees to legislation approved by a House committee.

A Senate-passed bill, by Sen. Lambert Boissiere, D-New Orleans, would let Orleans Parish voters decide whether to let the Fair Grounds install the gambling machines. Similar measures have failed in other legislative sessions. Slot machines had been barred from the track because Harrah's casino was granted a monopoly on gambling in New Orleans. If approved by the full House, and then through referendum by New Orleans voters, the bill would allow the track to install up to 700 slot machines.
