"This year we intended to develop an urban entertainment center with retail… we don't have a retail destination experience among Mandalay Resort Group's properties," said CFO Glenn Schaeffer.

Hyundai Wants Another Casino for Koreans - SOEL, KOREA - /Korean Herald/ - The Hyundai Group has withdrawn its first plan to open a casino in Korea January 10, in light of public concerns about gambling sprees among Koreans.

The first and only casino open in Korean is Chongsun Casino, opened last fall to revitalize the economy in a depressed mining town. Chongsun's popularity has been unprecedented, but controversy has mounted because of a rise in social problems blamed on the casino, such as addiction, crime, and homelessness.

The Korean government basically supports the Hyundai Group's plan to build a casino in North Korea's Mt. Kumgang area, but the Chongsun controversy has forced it to compromise by conceding only to a ''foreigners-only'' casino. Hyundai claims that a casino for only foreign tourists will not able to turn out profits. ''We will apply for the casino business once again early next week, with a hope that the government would give the go-ahead to a casino for both foreigners and Koreans,'' says Lee Joon-ki, an official at the Hyundai Merchant Marine Co.

Ministry officials say they will ''reconsider'' a new application, but admit that another casino for locals is unlikely as long as ''gambling fever'' negatively affects Koreans.
