BILOXI, MS - /AP/ - A man, who was distraught over losing money to a slot machine, shot three people before turning the gun on himself and committing suicide at a busy Gulf Coast casino January 13. Biloxi police said Sylvester McConnell, 48, of Mount Vernon, Ala., was playing the $5 slot machines late Saturday night at Casino Magic Biloxi and suddenly began firing. McConnell was sitting at a bank of $100 slot machines when he pulled a gun and shot a couple playing blackjack then shot another woman at an adjacent blackjack table, said a casino employee. The names of the victims were not released, but police said they were a 27-year-old Biloxi, MS woman and a 28-year-old Vancleave, MS man both in serious conditions; a 44-year-old Pascagoula, MS woman in good condition. American Medical Response, an emergency medical unit, confirmed that the shooter was dead. The three shooting victims were taken to hospitals. |

LAS VEGAS, NV - A Canadian visitor to Harrah's Las Vegas Casino & Hotel January 12 became an instant millionaire when she hit the jackpot and won more than $9.3 million on a Megabucks slot machine. Cynthia Malinoski of Mississauga, Ontario, had played the Megabucks machine in Harrah's Casino for less than an hour when she became the latest winner of the Megabucks progressive jackpot. "At first, I didn't realize that it was the Megabucks jackpot,'' said Malinoski, 37. "I thought I had won about $10,000. Then someone came by and explained to me that I had won the big jackpot.'' Malinoski and her husband, Tim, have an eight-month old son Kenny, and live in the bedroom community of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. A flight attendant for U.S. Airways, Malinoski said she had played ``about $15'' on the winning slot machine before she hit the jackpot. She plans to buy a bigger house with her winning. |
