New casino planned for Manchester city center
As reported by The Manchester Evening News

Manchester, England -- Plans for a giant casino in Manchester could be the first move in the city's bid to trump Blackpool as the Las Vegas of the north.

Proposals have been drawn up to create a new 46,000 sq ft casino in the troubled Great Northern Warehouse complex, between Peter Street and Deansgate.

It could be the first move in establishing the city as the gambling capital of England. Manchester is already home to six casinos - double the number in Blackpool, Liverpool and Leeds, which all have three.

Over the next few years, the number of casinos could increase two-fold, creating an industry that generates millions of pounds. Plans are currently being considered to build a GBP £260 million casino as part of the redevelopment of an area near Sportcity, in east Manchester, and one at the Salford Reds rugby league club.

A proposal has also been floated to build a gambling emporium as part of Belle Vue dog track, but this was put on ice. The M.E.N. has also learned that regional planning bosses are preparing a report that may limit the number of "mega casinos" in the north west.

As reported by The Associated Press

ALTOONA, Iowa - Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino wants to increase its visibility - big time.

Officials at the casino just east of Des Moines want to erect a $2 million sign that would stand taller than a 10-story building and be visible from more than one mile away.

The sign needs permission from Altoona City Council members, who have put it on their Monday meeting agenda.

"Casino" would be spelled out in giant, back-lit letters.

"We just need to let people know where we are," said Prairie Meadows spokesman Steve Berry.
