Hong Kong Jockey Club Fears
Competition From The Internet

HONG KONG, CHINA - The Hong Kong gambling industry fears ever-increasing competition from the Internet.

In Hong Kong, the only legal forms of gambling are betting on horse races and a lotto game known as "Mark Six." Both are operated exclusively by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, with betting centers across the region. Betting brought in over US$10.5 billion in the year ending last June 30, but a new survey shows that more people in Hong Kong are turning to offshore Internet gambling sites.

In the fourth-quarter of last year, the percentage of local Internet users visiting Internet casinos rose from 22 percent in October to 41 percent in December. "It's definitely increasing, and you've seen that no matter what countries have proposed, they have not had any power over companies which are based overseas, for taxation purposes," says Clayton Fitts, NetValue Sales & Marketing vice president.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club argues that overseas online betting sites are robbing the government of tax revenue and undermining the future of professional horse racing. The Jockey Club's own Internet betting site is still under construction, but its mobile betting service is up and running.

SunCruz Founder Murdered

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - Gus Boulis, the 51-year-old founder of the Miami Subs restaurant chain and SunCruz gambling cruises--Florida's biggest casino ship business--was shot to death February 6 night on an isolated road in Fort Lauderdale.

"Whoever committed the homicide had planned to shoot him," says Detective Mike Reed. "They knew the travel routes. They knew what they were doing." Boulis, a native of Greece, had been embroiled in a series of lawsuits and countersuits in recent months.

Last September, Boulis sold SunCruz to a group of Washington D.C. investors headed by Adam Kidan for $147 million. A feud ensued after the sale. In December, Kidan obtained a restraining order against Boulis, claiming Boulis attacked him in a business meeting. (Kidan had earlier alleged that Boulis had threatened to have him beaten or killed.)

Boulis was also being sued by his former girlfriend for child support and alimony, and by his former business partner, Dewayne Williams, who said Boulis cheated him out of his share when he sold SunCruz.

"Anyone who's had a past with Mr. Boulis we'll be talking to," says Detective Reid.
