New Casino Open In Dubuque
As Reported by KCRG-TV9 News

DUBUQUE, Iowa - A new casino is open in Dubuque. The casino at the Greyhound Park is getting great reviews from its visitors. It's attracting people from all over the country.

But it's the regular visitors who say the new casino is a real winner. Rockford native Lance Mayer and his god-father make their way to Dubuque each month to hit up the slot machines. For Mayer the size of this new casino was quite a shock. "It's not cram packed from isle to isle of machines. You can get through without bumping into people," said Mayer.

Casino management says visitors like these two have plenty of room and plenty of games to choose from.Dubuque Greyhound Park and Casino Manager, Bruce Wentworth said, "Our goal is to have1000 slot machines. We're moving some of the machines from the old space to the new space."

Right next door to the casino work continues on the future Hilton Hotel and Houlihan's restaurant.

"The two properties will complement each other and certainly will do the same cross marketing it will be very attractive for people across the two bridges," said Wentworth.

For now the out-of state gambling duo is happy just to be here together.

"I talked to my god-father he says a family that gambles together stays together. We just like to have fun win or lose," joked Mayer.

Gambling business: SA casino giant doubtful on Singapore prospective, stakes on Africa
As reported by gamblinggates.com

South Africa - South African casino and hotel operator Peermont Global is going to expand its gambling business into African market to keep profits rising. The country's second-largest hotel and gambling company is planning to open its resorts in Mozambique, Angola and Uganda.

"We believe Africa has tremendous potential," he said in an interview. "Obviously you have to take the bad with the good but our initial experience looking at Mozambique and Angola has been positive. We are also looking at something in Uganda," told Reuters Chief Executive Ernie Joubert.

The company is expecting to strike a deal next month and at least another one by the end of December. All projects abroad should be developed jointly with a local partner. The gambling provider believes, the new contracts will boost the net earnings this year. Experts predict their fully diluted headline earnings per share will be of 60 cents in 2005 compared to 49.7 cents in 2004.

The entire investment portfolio for developing new properties this year will be of about 175 million rand ($US 26,4 million). This includes the company's bid for building two grand casinos in Singapore. However, Joubert estimates their chances as very low taking into account the strong position of the largest gambling companies they compete with: Harrah's Entertainment, MGM Mirage and Las Vegas Sands.

"Realistically our chances are low ... we are still part of a big crowd running against some very big companies and the process favors the big ones," he said.

If failing to get the Singaporean deal, the company will go ahead its African focus concentrating on cities and main towns. The further prospective also envisages running safari lodges with the help of getting a stake in a company with expertise in this area.
