Lake Michigan Riverboats Uses Barges
to Compete With Rivals

JOLIET, IL -/Indianapolis Star/ - Think of a barge, and most people picture mountains of coal being pushed down the Ohio River. In Illinois, they picture Las Vegas.

Stats of Illinois is taking riverboat casinos to a new level, allowing the construction of floating gambling palaces for which being on the water is little more than an engineering obstacle. Now the Indiana General Assembly is grappling with whether to level the playing field, allowing the state's Lake Michigan casinos to build barges of their own. The House already has passed a bill allowing the option.

The future of casino gambling in Indiana already is taking shape along a three-block stretch of the Des Plaines River in Joliet.

There, Harrah's Casino is building two barges, each about 200 feet long and 100 feet wide, to replace its existing riverboats -- the Northern Star and Southern Star, which operate side by side.

The barges, expect to be completed by fall 2001, will hold a new 40,000-square-foot casino. They will be permanently moored, and the coffer cell -- the area now housing the boats -- will be closed off from the river so the barges are not subject to wakes created by passing vessels.

Michael St. Pierre, senior vice president and general manager of the facility, said the "Las Vegas-style" casino would offer a gaming environment vastly different from what riverboat visitors are accustomed to. Gone will be multiple levels with stairs to climb and poor air quality. In their place will be high ceilings and a single level of gaming. (continued page 4)

Penn & Teller

Penn Jillette is the big guy, the talker, while Teller is the little fellow, silent, the bearer of the brunt of most of the action. Fellow illusionists refer to them as "Outlaws" or "Mavericks of Magic." They will appear at Rio Suite Hotel Casino's Samba Theater in Las Vegas from March 16 to April 1, 2001.

Great favorites of David Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien and "Saturday Night Live," they are by far the funniest act in the comedy magic business. Their well-calculated nonsense has been equally well-received on television, in theaters, nightclubs and hotel showrooms.
