Auckland Casino to Expand Gaming Facility

WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND - Australian gaming and entertainment company Sky City Limited recently submitted an application to New Zealand's Casino Control Authority to build a convention center across the road from its Auckland entertainment base, where it plans to add more gaming tables and electronic gaming machines.

The $16 million project will increase Auckland Casino's designated gaming area by expanding into the area currently occupied by a conference center.

The total number of gaming machines in Auckland Casino will increased to 1,647, an addition of 230 machines. 12 gaming tables would also be added to make a total of 110 tables available.

The new gaming area will include a new sports bar.

Lake Michigan Riverboats Uses Barges
to Compete With Rivals
Harrah's is not alone in its decision to replace its riverboats. The Hollywood Casino in Aurora announced plans in February for a $75 million expansion, which will double the number of gamblers the casino can serve. That barge will hold a 53,000-square-foot casino on one level.

Indiana casino operators say the state needs to get on board the barge trend, and quickly. Northern Indiana casinos already are reporting losing revenue to Illinois because Indiana does not allow dockside gambling. Here, customers can board riverboats only at specific times.

The measure passed by the House allows all the state's casinos to go to dockside, and it makes barges an option for the five northern Indiana boats. Casino operators believe this would allow casinos to devote more room to gambling and entertainment, and keep everything under one roof.

"It's all about convenience. They don't want to wait for a cruise. They don't want to wait for a cashier. They don't want to wait," St. Pierre said.

At Harrah's in East Chicago, IA, moving to barges would open new doors for the casino, said Joseph A. Domenico, senior vice president and general manager. The casino could build additional hotel rooms and a health club, expand gaming space and add an entertainment venue to attract more visitors, he said.

While Domenico acknowledged that "Indiana will never, never be close to what the Las Vegas experience is," the chairman of the Casino Association of Indiana said the state's gambling operations must continue to invest in their properties if they are to remain competitive with Illinois.
