Casino Jets Working to Bring
Back High Rollers

LAS VEGAS, (Reuters) - Private jet fleets at the nation's top gaming companies have been working overtime in the last two weeks, as casinos try to lure back high rollers leery about flying since the horrifying hijackings of Sept. 11, casino executives said on Tuesday.

Anxiety about flying in the wake of the Sept. 11 air attacks is partly to blame for the preference for private over commercial planes, but avoiding delays due to stricter security at U.S. airports is also a major factor, according to casino executives and industry sources.

The high-roller gaming business, already in decline due to the economic slowdown, has suffered disproportionately in the current air travel slowdown because most big-betting customers depend on air travel to reach their destinations.

"The play, especially in the high end, has been reduced dramatically,'' Tom Gallagher, chief executive officer of Park Place Entertainment Corp. told Reuters at the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas. ``We've experienced dramatic changes in all parts of the market here in Las Vegas.''

In a bid to lure back those customers, Park Place and MGM Mirage, the two companies that cater most to high rollers -- have put their private jets into active duty in the last two weeks, company officials said.

Park Place's two private jets had been listed for sale before the attacks, but the company is no longer in any hurry to sell them, Gallagher said.

"We've used them to bring in players from various parts of the country (since the attacks). They're always eager to use the private jets.''.

Gallagher added that the jets are being used first and foremost to lure back domestic high rollers from markets like Los Angeles. He said that international players, who also make up a large portion of the business, have received less emphasis so far.
