Palms Casino Resort Opens with Celebrity-Studded Ceremony

LAS VEGAS - David Schwimmer, Cuba Gooding Jr., Tyra Banks, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Webber, Ali Landry, Caprice, Dennis Rodman, and Matt Williams were just a few of the stars checking out Las Vegas' newest place to see and be seen, the Palms Casino Resort, on November 15.

Over 7,000 people including celebrities and VIPs tested their luck at the ultra-chic hotel and casino, which boasts such eclectic restaurants and entertainment venues such as Rain in the Desert, Little Buddha Cafe, and Ghost Bar.

Socialite Paris Hilton arrived to the event Thursday night wearing a Cornell Collins-designed corset and gown, inlaid with $1 million worth of gaming chips. Italian painter Filippo Ioco exhibited his artwork - an interpretation of the Palms' atmosphere painted on nearly nude models stationed throughout the casino.

Located on Flamingo Road, a half-mile west of the Strip, the Palms is Las Vegas' first boutique hotel, with 455 deluxe, oversized rooms, plus:

  • A 95,000 sq. ft. casino with the most comprehensive Race & Sports Book in Las Vegas, complete with the "Sports Express'' drive-up window to place bets.
  • Brenden Theatres is a 14-screen plush theater Cineplex with couple's loveseats.
  • Little Buddha Cafe from Paris, Nine from Chicago, the Blue Agave Oyster and Chile Bar with more than 350 margaritas and 150 tequilas, Ghost Bar, an indoor-outdoor lounge on the 55th floor with a 275-degree view of the glittering skyline.
  • Rain in the Desert is a multi-level, nightclub/concert venue with a computer-programmed river of water, private booths with water sofas, skyboxes with private booths with water sofas, skyboxes with private balconies, and flames shooting down from a ceiling superstructure at dancers below.

The new Palms hotel-casino stands in Las Vegas. The small, off-the-Strip hotel tries to avoid the "theme" resorts that have been the rage in Las Vegas.

  • Spa at the Palms is a 20,000 sq. ft., three-story spa featuring candlelight Yoga classes, Botox/Collagen parties, and more than 20 types of fun and fruity body treatments.

Palms Casino Resort, opened November 15, marks the newest project for the Maloof family, who manage successful business ventures in the fields of banking, hotels, and sports. The Fiesta Casino, developed by the Maloofs in 1994, enjoyed two expansions and financial success under the operation of George Maloof.

Foxwoods To Open
The B.B. King Dance & Nite Clubs In January

NEW YORK - B.B. King and Foxwoods Resort Casino plan to open the B.B. King Dance & Nite Clubs, featuring adjoining entertainment venues that will offer dancing in the larger of the two and a smaller jazz, blues and comedy venue on January 11, 2002.

"It's a logical pairing of the world's best casino and the top blues artist on the planet,'' said Tom Cantone, vice president of entertainment at Foxwoods. "We already offer the most headliner entertainment of any casino in the U.S., and these two clubs will double the number of our existing clubs for the benefit of those who visit Foxwoods to club hop and take in the very best entertainment.

"In addition to opening the club, B.B. King will play several times a year, jamming with up-and-coming talent, Cantone said.

The entertainment agreement is a first for the award-winning casino owned and operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, which opened in 1992 on the tribe's reservation in southeastern Connecticut and quickly grew to become the world's largest.

"It's the first time anything at Foxwoods has carried an outside name,'' said Bill Sherlock, Foxwoods president and CEO. "Foxwoods is already synonymous with entertainment in the Northeast, and it's only appropriate that for our first venture with an outside name that it be with someone with the star quality B.B. King. He's a winner and we're proud to be associated with him.

Located on Pequot Trail in the heart of the Casino's Theater District, the clubs will accommodate nearly 700 patrons and will offer a combined 13,000 square feet of entertainment space. The Dance Club, the larger of the two, will feature an Art-deco motif, a theater-style entrance marquee. With a centerpiece, 700 square foot stage, the room will also have two bars, a d.j. booth and a dance floor. It will accommodate 429 patrons. The Nite Club portion of the complex is half the size of the Dance Club and will provide for 245 patrons. It will sport a converted warehouse design motif, a fiber-optic illuminated glass block along with a granite and copper bar. B.B. King memorabilia and a custom portrait will also greet fans.
