Online Gambling Moves
Into the Mainstream

/USA TODAY/ - Despite all the odds against it, online gambling is proliferating and edging into the mainstream. Jupiter Media Metrix (JMM), a firm that does comprehensive research to analyze the impact of the Internet and new technologies on commerce and marketing, will start tracking and studying gambling sites and online gambling ads as a separate category.

JMM's Charles Buchwalter explains, "There are certain things that have been on the underbelly of the Net. A year ago, gambling sites and advertising would have been in that category. Many of these sites are actually making it into the mainstream. People are taking notice and spending more time on them."

According to JMM, 13.6 million individuals visited gambling sites last December and spent an average of 20.2 minutes for the month at those sites. Eight of JMM’s top 15 gambling sites didn't even exist in December 2000, and the number of online gambling ads grew that same year from 911 million to 2.5 billion — making the Internet gaming industry the fifth largest advertising segment on the Net.

Indiana Looks to Dockside Gambling - CHICAGO, IL - Indiana lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow dockside gambling at the state’s ten riverboat casinos. The Indiana Senate has approved a dockside gambling bill and has sent it to the Indiana House, hoping that a law will result in an additional $111 million a year in wagering taxes. Riverboat casinos in neighboring Illinois have been cashing in on dockside gambling since the summer of 1999, when Illinois ended its nearly ten-year-old rule that patrons could gamble only when the boats were cruising. In 2000, dockside gambling's first full year in Illinois, Illinois riverboats’ revenues jumped 21.6 percent from the year before. A recent study done for the Casino Association of Indiana concluded that much of Illinois' increased revenue came from "the customers' convenience and the lack of wait time," courtesy of dockside gambling. For first time, Indiana Gov. Frank O'Bannon says he might accept permanently docked riverboat casinos to help boost Indiana’s economy, but he wants a provision in the bill that would limit the number of casino slot machines and card games.
