Need A Score, Money Line or Total From 2001?
Erwin's Baseball Insight Annual Has It

By Howard Schwartz

Annually, one of the most popular, sought-after resources for the baseball bettor who wants to look back a season, game by game in particular, is Phil Erwin's Baseball Insight Annual. The 2002 edition has just arrived at Gambler's Book Shop. The 200-page 5x8 plastic spiralbound edition sells for $32.95, and here's what it contains:

Overall, this is one of the all-time best resources for angle shooters, theory testers or pattern identifiers among handicappers who love to seek out and isolate some factor which might lead to winners when betting on baseball.

Each team's 2002 performance by game, listed in date order, information that shows if a team won or lost; who the opponent was; where the game was played (home or away); whether the game took place day or night; whether it was played on grass or turf; the number of runs scored by both teams; who the starters were for each team (with indications if a lefty started); the starter's personal decision (did he won, lose or was it a no-decision); the number of innings the starter went and earned runs allowed; number of innings the bullpen went and earned runs and unearned runs (runs scored on errors) allowed; a three-letter abbreviation for the name of the starter for the opposing team; whether opposing starter was lefty or righty; the line on the game and the over-under (run total) betting number for the game.

The line listed is the Vegas opening line.

Thus you can see which teams got off to a good start or a slow start or which got streaky before or after the All-Star game; and perhaps when a team got their offensive act together and started scoring runs or just stopped and had no offense at all.

Other material included for each team shows you the average number of runs each team scored last season; how many runs were scored by the team in a variety of situations (compared to opponents), like night vs. lefties; on grass; with a quality starter; vs. groundball or flyball pitchers. You'll also be able to see a three-year summary of how a team performed against all other league teams home and away with average score and how often the team went over or under the total in those three seasons. For example, the Yankees vs. Toronto in the past three years have been an over team in 15 of 20 away meetings. Against Baltimore, at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees have gone over in 15 of 22 games.

How do all teams do against Extreme Groundball and Extreme Flyball pitchers plus Extreme Groundball and Extreme Contact pitchers? Erwin shows you how all team performed with a quality start and against a quality start; also provides a section showing how teams did at each ballpark, home and way in the 6 ½ to more than 13 runs scored range and indicates a three-year park run factor.
For those interested in examining Away Underdogs as a betting angle for the past two years, Erwin shows you which teams would have earned you a profit overall and how much.

A 31-page section titled Starting Pitchers shows you (from Abbott to Zito) what each hurler's record was for the 2001 season and his overall ERA; then there's

a home-away record and home-away ERA; the ERA and records for day games, night games; grass games and turf games; how often their games went Over or Under in 2001 and their ERA and record vs. every other league team. You can also see what kind of run support he got when he started and what kind of bullpen support he got after he left the game.
