Israeli Casino Hit by Tank Shells

JERICHO, WEST BANK - Oasis Casino, a desert casino that raked in millions of dollars for Palestinians before hostilities with Israelis erupted was shelled overnight November 12, causing extensive damage to the building's top floor offices.

The casino closed October 31 after a month of instability in the territories. During the previous two years, the October average for the casino was about 2,500 visitors a day, primarily Israeli clientele, according to public relations representative Ilan Pilo. However, the recent spate of rioting, which quickly elicited a ban on Israeli travel to the autonomous areas, slowed business to a trickle. As Pilo explained, "At the beginning of the riots, about 100 people a day would visit. Lately, however, the casino has been quite empty. The last few days, we had maybe a few visitors per day."

This is the first time Israel has caused serious damage to the casino, a facility that is an important source of Palestinian Authority revenue. During recent weeks of clashes in the territories, the Israel Defensive Forces (IDF) has fired at buildings near the facility, but has been careful not to harm the building.

The $150 million casino-hotel complex shattered by tank rounds, small rockets and machine guns, leaving smoked glass blocks and jagged holes.

Casino security chief Alexander Kiss said the night-time barrage originated from Vered Jericho, a Jewish settlement on a rocky hill looming over the world's oldest known town, and an open area on its southern outskirts.

Sake as well as imported Japanese and Chinese beers are available. Shou Ki is open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight on the second level of the pavilion.

Jackpot Java, now open on the pavilion's first level, features the area's best gourmet coffees, cappuccino, light breakfast fare and sandwiches. Buffington Harbor guests can enjoy scrumptious treats to go or sit down and chat over an espresso daily from 7 a.m. until 5 a.m.

"Gamblers want a variety of food options. They demand quality and they want it quick," said R.T. Browning, Director of

Operations for Buffington Harbor. "When guests visit Buffington Harbor they have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of first rate dining options, live entertainment and, of course, great gaming action."

Shou Ki and Jackpot Java bring the total dining options at Buffington Harbor to seven. The pavilion is also home to Harbor Steakhouse, Skyline Buffet, Miller Pizza, Harbor Treats and Lakeshore Lounge.

Trump Hotel Casino and Majestic Star Casino are located at Buffington Harbor, just 25 minutes from downtown Chicago. The casinos at Buffington Harbor are the only casinos in Northwest Indiana offering boarding for 30 minutes every hour. Competitors only offer boarding every two hours.
