CLINTON, IOWA - While tagging along on a tour bus driven by her husband, Gayle Hartman dropped a few quarters into a Wheel of Fortune slot machine on Clinton's Riverboat Casino.

She didn’t expect to win a dime. Instead, she became the biggest winner in the casino’s 10-year history with a $539,981 jackpot. Hartman, a Realtor in Princeton, Ill., said Nov. 5 she still is shocked that she won so big.

She was having fun on the casino, but she decided to quit gambling after losing $70. Her husband talked her back into it after a Wheel of Fortune statewide progressive slot machine became available next to the machine at which he was playing. Hartman’s machine lit up as a winner.

The slot machine manufacturer, International Gaming Technology, is responsible for covering the progressive jackpot payouts. A response team from that company was sent to the casino to pay a portion of the jackpot that night.

The rest of Hartman’s jackpot will be handed out over the next 20 years.
