Casino Games Going to Washington Town - CLE ELUM, WA – Casino-style gambling is going to Cle Elum and, with it, casino-style jobs.

Chris McDaniel is opening a branch of his Blackjack Academy in the Harold Weis Memorial Building in Roslyn to train people who will be hired as dealers at two Cle Elum restaurants that have applied to offer casino-style gambling - Diamondback's and the Sunset Cafe.

Blackjack Academy is hosting a job fair from noon to 5 p.m. on April 17th and 18th in Roslyn. McDaniel said representatives from Sunset and Diamondback's will conduct job interviews and do screening of applicants during the job fair. McDaniel said academy tuition is $1,400 with $700 paid up front and $700 withdrawn from paychecks after the person starts working. The training takes about a month and a half. He said he has agreed to train up to 40 people, and the school will probably start on Wednesday.

He said learning how to become a card dealer is harder than most people think. "The biggest problems is we've all been taught to stop and talk, and look around," McDaniel said. "You have to be trained to break lifelong habits." Blackjack Academy has been training dealers in Burien for 4-1/2 years.

The academy qualifies as a retraining program under the state WorkSource and WorkFirst programs. He said the school is popular with state employment officials because casinos are the fastest growing industry in the state. McDaniel said he came to the Puget Sound area right when casinos were beginning to open. He had owned two card rooms in Sacramento, CA, and before that made his living as a professional gambler.
