LAS VEGAS - A Phoenix-area man who won $3.2 million on Wheel of Fortune® Monday night (September 1, 2003) says his Labor Day slot jackpot means he can retire earlier. Anthony Rios won on a Wheel of Fortune® quarter machine that his wife, Carmen, was playing at Mermaids Casino in downtown Las Vegas. When she turned away to talk to a casino employee, Rios leaned over and hit the spin button.

"It got very quiet," he said, as the three winning symbols lined up. "It was like the casino just receded into the background. Then my wife started screaming really, really loud and time seemed to start again."

Rios, 43-year-old manager for a software company, says the only thing he knows for certain is that they'll use the money to pay for the education of their two children. "Maybe I'll retire sooner than I planned. I'll tell you, winning a few million dollars sure takes the pressure off the breadwinner!" he said, grinning from ear to ear. The couple arrived in Las Vegas on Sunday, August 31, and because his wife had never been downtown, Rios wanted her to see the "Glitter Gulch" along Fremont Street. Someone told them that Mermaids had great hotdogs so they stopped in to eat and began playing the machine.
