Cowboy Wins Pot In Foxwoods Poker Event

Connecticut--With a live television audience cheering him on, an Alabama cowboy who hid his expressions behind dark glasses won $1 million in the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods Resort Casino. Foxwoods was the fifth stop on the World Poker Tour, the Travel Channel's wildly popular Wednesday night “reality” poker series. The three-day tournament set a record for the tour's prize pool –– $3,155,000.

Winner Hoyt Corkins, who keeps 60 head of cattle back home, wore a black cowboy hat and boots to the final table, playing No Limit Texas Hold 'Em against five top players on a Hollywood set in the Grand Pequot Ballroom.I

Corkins started the game with the most chips –– $1.2 million worth –– and eliminated his competition over five hours by repeatedly going “all in,” or risking his entire stack. He waited out his opponents' decisions by staring straight ahead and crossing his arms over his chest, removing his sunglasses only after he beat his last opponent, Mohamed Ibrahim of Long Beach, Calif.

“I was worried the whole time,” Corkins admitted.

The audience loved him. Poker exploded as a spectator sport when the Travel Channel began airing the World Poker Tour this year. The producers developed camera technology that enables viewers to see the players' “hole cards,” or the cards that are not showing. They shot biographical segments of players and brought in celebrity Vince Van Patten and poker aficionado Mike Sexton as commentators and the glamorous Shana Hiatt as host.
