Hard Rock Casino To Open
2 Casinos in Florida

Hard Rock Cafe International, owners of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, broke ground January 8, on a new Hotel and Casino Resort in Hollywood, FL.

A partnership with the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the Cordish Company calls for the construction of two new Seminole Hard Rock Hotels and Casinos one in Hollywood, Fla. and the other in Tampa, Fla.

"This agreement with the Seminole Tribe supports our global plan to extend the Hard Rock brand name beyond our core business and into the real estate, gaming, leisure and hotel sectors," said Scott Little, CFO and senior vice president, strategic planning, Hard Rock Cafe International. "This is obviously a very exciting time for us as we enter our 30th year. Our unmatched success in theme dining and entertainment has always focused on delivering an exceptional guest experience and this project will be no exception."

The new Hard Rock Hotel and Casinos in Hollywood and Tampa, Fla. are part of a $400 million project planned for the Seminole reservations. Completion of both projects is slated for the end of 2002.

The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Tampa agreement calls for the development and construction of a new four-star hotel and gaming resort situated on the Seminole Reservation in Ybor City. The new hotel will consist of 200 guestrooms, a Hard Rock Cafe or nightclub, a large pool, pool bar and beach club, a 24-hour restaurant, a gaming facility, and a new parking facility. The casino will feature a center bar and Hard Rock Cafe's signature music memorabilia.

The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Hollywood will be on the Seminole Reservation, located in Hollywood, Fla. The resort will consist of 750 guest rooms, a gaming facility with a center bar, a Hard Rock Cafe, a 1,000 seat Hard Rock Live venue, a premium health spa and extensive beach club including an oversized pool and pool bar, substantial upscale independent restaurant, as well as a Hard Rock retail store selling Hard Rock branded merchandise.

Casino Opens in German Airport

LONDON, ENGLAND - Europe's first airport casino opened January 5 in Frankfurt, Germany to give weary travelers a different way of enduring travel delays.

"There is a trend in Europe for more gambling, and people waiting for planes now have something other to do than go to the bar," said casino manager Rolf Schumacher as he opens up the roulette and card tables and slot machines.

MGM Grand Breaks Ground on Employee Childcare Center - DALLAS, TX - The MGM Grand Hotel broke ground January 3 on a $4 million child-care center. The 21,000-square-foot center is slated to open in August, and will be operated by Dallas-based Children's Choice Learning Centers. The center will be available to MGM Grand and New York-New York employees, and will serve children ages six weeks to 12 years. The center is planned to be open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and to accommodate 330 children per eight-hour shift. The childcare center will also offer a get-well clinic for mildly ill children. MGM Mirage announced plans for a foundation to provide scholarships for children of qualifying employees.

Harrah's New Orleans Operator Files for Reorganization - NEW ORLEANS, LA - JCC Holding Co., owner and operator of Harrah's New Orleans Casino, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection January 4. JCC Holding announced in November 2000 its intent to file for bankruptcy protection. Chapter 11 is the most common form of bankruptcy and frees a company from the threat of creditors' lawsuits while it reorganizes its finances. The casino said in November that its $100 million yearly minimum state tax obligation is an impossible burden.

Harrah's Entertainment, which owns about 43 percent of JCC Holding, announced in November it would not guarantee the casino's tax payment past the March 31 expiration of its current guarantee unless the tax obligation were substantially restructured.

Three More Strip Mega-Resorts Planned - /CasinoWire/ - LAS VEGAS, NV - A group of developers, World Port Resorts, is seeking investors to build three new mega-resorts across from Mandalay Bay on the Las Vegas Strip. The developers will clear 77 acres on the south end of the Strip, including 48 acres from McCarran International Airport. They have already demolished some of the properties near the famous ''Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas''sign, including the Welcome Center and the Miami Beach. The developers include Makena Companies, which has received about $70 million dollars towards the project from Silicon Valley dot-commer Tom Gonzales.

Bobcat Goldthwait

The unpredictable, whiny and multi-octave comedian Bobcat Goldthwait will perform at Sunset Station's Club Madrid January 20.

Bobcat, born Robert Goldthwait in Syracuse, NY, began doing stand up at 16. He has directed music videos, voiced cartoon characters, hosted his own imprvo/game show on FX and has even appeared as a panelist on Politiclly Incorrect. One of his better-known projects is the film Shakes the Clown, a cult classic.
