St. Louis casino developer is chosen
As reported by The Kansas City Star

Las Vegas-based Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. was selected by the Missouri Gaming Commission to develop new casinos in downtown St. Louis and in south St. Louis County.

Commissioners voted 4-1 Thursday in favor of Pinnacle's plan over those of Isle of Capri, Harrah's Entertainment and Riviera Holdings Corp. The decision effectively puts those companies out of the running, barring any unexpected developments.

In the past, selection by the Gaming Commission has been tantamount to licensing. The casinos would be Missouri's 12th and 13th gambling boats.

Pinnacle's selection was widely expected partly because of no significant licensing issues in other jurisdictions where it operates, plus strong endorsements from St. Louis city and county governments.

Pinnacle officials said they would begin construction as soon as the proper permits were issued.

Riviera officials threw in the towel Thursday, advising investors the company would write off the $600,000 spent on the unsuccessful bid.

Pinnacle's downtown St. Louis project poses a clear threat to the nearby President Casino.

Once the new property opens, commission director Kevin Mullally speculated, the older, smaller President just a few blocks from the Pinnacle site "would no longer be viable." The commission has been long outspoken on the need for a first-class casino in downtown St. Louis.

"We think this will be a major attraction," said Mullally of the Pinnacle project.

European Poker Tour to kick off at Casino Barcelona
As reported by The Independent

BARCELONA, Spain -- After months of exhaustive negotiations the European Poker Tour gets under way next month. The first event will be the EUR1,000 no limit hold'em at Casino Barcelona, Spain, which runs from 14 to 20 September.

The final table players will be filmed in action on a spectacular pounds 70,000 set built for the series. Next up is the pounds 3,000 buy-in no limit hold'em at the Victoria Casino, London's European Poker Championships in October. A total of six European venues have committed to taking part in the first series of competitions. The list may be expanded as several poker operators in other countries are interested in being part of Europe's version of the American World Poker Tour.

The EPT will be filmed for television and shown as a series starting in April of next year.

All the winners will earn a seat at the finals in Monte Carlo next March as well as their prize money. In some events both winner and runner-up will win final seats.

Smooth Sale for Harrah's?
As reported by The Motley Fool

Back in July, when Harrah's Entertainment and Caesars Entertainment announced their intent to merge and create the world's largest casino operator, it was apparent that the companies would have to sell off several properties in various markets to ease trade concerns. On August 31, the two companies confirmed that they are in discussions with an affiliate of Los Angeles-based investment firm Colony Capital to sell four properties for an estimated $1.3 billion.

The potential deal involves Harrah's Tunica and Caesars' Bally's Tunica in the Tunica, Miss., market, Harrah's East Chicago, and Caesars' Atlantic City Hilton. At first glance, Harrah's and Caesars look to be getting premium value for subpremium assets at a hefty 8.5 times EBITDA -- and all in one shot.
