Hilton "plans Vegas-style casino"
As reported by The Reuters UK

LONDON, England - The Hilton Group wants to open a Las Vegas-style casino costing 200 million pounds in northern England, the Independent newspaper has reported.

The hotels and gaming company has held talks with local government officials in the northwest seaside resort of Blackpool, the newspaper quoted a Hilton spokesman as saying.

The report said the complex would only be built if the British government caps the number of larger "super casinos" due to be legalised under government plans to reform the gambling laws.

Rules capping the size of casinos and restricting them to city centres will be loosened and membership laws will be scrapped if the reforms become law.

"We would not want to be party to the proliferation of many, many casinos," the Hilton spokesman was quoted as saying by the Independent on Monday.

No one from Hilton was available for comment.

Prime Minister Tony Blair said last week no more than 20 to 40 mega-casinos would be built.

Parliament is due to debate the reforms on Monday. Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said she would consider amending the government's plans after critics said deregulation could increase gambling addiction.

International casino operators have already earmarked around 5 billion pounds to invest in Britain if parliament approves the reforms.

Ameristar Casinos plans 300-room hotel, garage in St. Charles, Mo.
As reported by The Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News

SAINT CHARLES, Missouri - Ameristar Casinos Inc. said Thursday that it hopes to build a 300-room hotel, a second parking garage and other attractions at its St. Charles Casino.

"We expect to begin construction on these improvements in the first half of 2005," the company's chairman, Craig Neilsen, said in a conference call. "We believe that they will further strengthen the competitive position of the property."

The casino operator, based in Las Vegas, said it had begun designing the project, which could hinge on improvements in road access.

Ameristar's expansion calls for an all-suites hotel and 20,000 square feet of meeting facilities, in addition to a new entertainment pavilion and the additional garage.

Tony Raymon, the casino's general manager, said he was optimistic that the long-awaited hotel might become a reality. "It's not a go, but it's a huge step in the right direction."
