Update 1: Stanley Ho to Open New Casino in Macau
As reported by The Associated Press

MACAU - Gaming tycoon Stanley Ho will open a new casino in Macau in an attempt to fend off competition from Las Vegas rivals after losing a four-decade monopoly in the gambling enclave.

The first phase of the Greek Mythology Casino at the New Century Hotel will open to gamblers on Dec. 23, the hotel's deputy general manager, Michael Chan, said Wednesday. The hotel is a subsidiary of Ho's Macau Gaming Co.

The first phase of the casino has 228 gaming tables with a gambling space of 160,000 square feet (14,864 square meters), he said. The second phase will double the number of tables and space, and is scheduled to open by next February, Chan said by telephone.

The Macau government decided in 2002 to end the gambling monopoly held by Ho. In May, Las Vegas mogul Sheldon Adelson opened the doors of the first new competitor for Ho, the Sands Macau casino. Another Las Vegas operator, Steve Wynn, is scheduled to open the Wynn Macau by the end of 2006 near Ho's flagship property, the Lisboa casino-hotel.

Faced with the growing competition, Ho is trying hard to keep up the fight by beefing up his casinos, including the Lisboa.

The Greek Mythology will feature massive statues of Greek gods and goddesses, including Poseidon and Zeus, as well as nightly Moulin Rouge-style dances, casino spokesman Angus Ho said.

Last week, another of Ho's companies, Melco International Development Ltd., signed a deal with Australia's richest man, Kerry Packer, to develop another luxury hotel and casino in Macau.

Ho holds a 42 percent stake in the development, while Packer's company, Publishing & Broadcasting Ltd., has a 28 percent stake.

InterCasino - An Award Winning Year

LONDON - For the fourth year in a row, InterCasino (www.intercasino.co.uk) has been voted the player's favourite online casino by the readers of Gambling Online Magazine (GOM)! Considered the Oscars of the interactive gaming industry, Gambling Online Magazine's reader's choice poll is the largest sampling of online gamblers anywhere in the world, with over 35,000 online gamblers having participated in the survey.

Out of more than 30 voting categories, InterCasino's award for 'Top Casino' is the highest achievable honour for a casino. InterCasino also received several Honourable Mentions in the GOM awards including 'Best Software', 'Best Reputation', 'Best Sign-Up Bonus', 'Best Rewards Program', 'Best for Customer Service', 'Best Progressive Slots' and an 'Editor's Pick'.

Beyond the awards, mentions and honours, InterCasino was inducted into Gambling Online Magazine's Hall of Fame, a new category created to honour InterCasino for being the player's favourite online casino for four years running.

"InterCasino is in a league of its own as far as players are concerned," said Gambling Online Magazine Editor Michael Caselli. "Every year they continue to impress our readers through constant innovation that makes some of their competitors look like they are standing still. My hat goes off to this year's Top Casino," he continued.

Taking a quote from the Gambling Online Magazine Yearbook, "The constantly innovating InterCasino is recognized for its huge number of MEGA-Jackpot winners, its award-winning affiliate program and its fantastically generous bonuses, player comps and its jovial casino manager Jane Bentley."

InterCasino.co.uk attributes its success to constant innovation. According to InterCasino UK casino manager Jane Bentley, "We strive to continually improve, innovate and deliver the highest possible quality in everything we do. Highlights for me would be launching our UK casino earlier this year, as would being the first online casino to have authentic pub-style Fruit Machines! This award is even more special to InterCasino UK, and to me personally too, as it's from the people that really matter - the players. A big thank you to everyone who voted for us!"
