Treasure Bay tourney winner ready to cruise

BILOXI, Mississippi - Augustus Nelson was running late on Nov. 14 as the two-day, $25,000 Cruise N Cash Slot Tournament headed into its third and final session at Treasure Bay Casino.

The last to take his seat only seconds before his final round, the retiree from Meridian, Miss., was not even among the top scorers in the first two sessions of the event. But two back-to-back Red, White and Blue 7s in the third session rocketed Nelson's total score to 31,621 - far past the other 220 tournament players - and landed him into first place. The score earned Nelson $10,000 cash and a Carnival cruise for two, plus a $500 bonus for best single tournament score and $50 for best third session score.

Second-place winner Phyllis Mason of Gatlinburg, Tenn., also earned most of her total 23,109 points in the third round. She took home a total cash prize of $5,300. Debra Cook of Niota, Tenn., came in third, winning $2,100, and Sandra Sharp of Birmingham, Ala., came in fourth place winning a cash prize of $1,100.

All four top tournament winners registered in person on Friday, Nov. 12 and received 1,000 extra points added to their final score. Cash prizes went to the top 22 scorers of the tournament, and 60 best-of-session winners also took home cash. All 220 players' scores were calculated using the best two out of three scores from all three sessions.
