Indiana casino operators say the state needs to get on board the barge trend, and quickly. Northern Indiana casinos already are reporting losing revenue to Illinois because Indiana does not allow dockside gambling. Here, customers can board riverboats only at specific times. The measure passed by the House allows all the state's casinos to go to dockside, and it makes barges an option for the five northern Indiana boats. Casino operators believe this would allow casinos to devote more room to gambling and entertainment, and keep everything under one roof. "It's all about convenience. They don't want to wait for a cruise. They don't want to wait for a cashier. They don't want to wait," St. Pierre said. At Harrah's in East Chicago, IA, moving to barges would open new doors for the casino, said Joseph A. Domenico, senior vice president and general manager. The casino could build additional hotel rooms and a health club, expand gaming space and add an entertainment venue to attract more visitors, he said. While Domenico acknowledged that "Indiana will never, never be close to what the Las Vegas experience is," the chairman of the Casino Association of Indiana said the state's gambling operations must continue to invest in their properties if they are to remain competitive with Illinois. |
