Casinos Make It Hip to Be Indian

NORWICH, CT - /CasinoWire/ - According to the 2000 census figures released March 19, the number of Connecticut residents claiming Indian ancestry has increased by 50% since the 1990 census and the later advent of Indian casinos in the state.

About 6,700 people said they were Indians in 1990, but in the 2000 census, 9,600 claimed to be solely of Indian ancestry while more than 14,000 claimed to be of mixed Indian blood. Tribal leaders say the lure of casino wealth is a major contributing factor.

The Mashantucket Pequots opened Foxwoods Resort Casino, one of the most profitable casinos in the world, in 1992. Then the Mohegan Sun opened in 1996. "Money is the greatest attraction in the world," says Ralph Sturges, chief of Mohegan Tribe, "I think that's one of the reasons. I really do. Because Indians are making money, now it's a privilege to become one."

Casino-owning tribes give preferential hiring treatment to fellow Indians, so that factor must also be considered given the increase in the Indian population. Others say that our culture now encourages people to celebrate their diversity.

"There a heightened awareness about Native American ancestry here in Connecticut, and a great deal of people do research to find out who their ancestors are and where they come from," maintains Chief Standing Bear, leader of a faction of Mohegans not recognized by the casino-owning tribe.
