LAS VEGAS, NV - John Ward (photo right) of New Hampshire hit an $8 million Megabucks jackpot at the Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on March 14. Ward is a regular Las Vegas visitor and an avid poker player who participated in last year's World Series of Poker. He said he felt lucky Wednesday, and after winning a $250 jackpot, he decided to devote part of it to playing Megabucks. He says that he might use the money to build a warehouse for the chain of dollar stores he owns.

WENDOVER, NV - Kirk Tolman of Utah missed out on a $7.9 million jackpot because he inserted only two coins into a Megabucks slot machine instead of the required three. The 22-year-old was playing at State Line Hotel Casino in Wendover, Nevada. Tolman says he was talking to a friend and was not paying close attention to the game when he missed the jackpot. "I always play 'max' coins, but I was talking to my friend and wasn't paying attention," says Tolman. With his two-coin bet, Tolman won $10,000 on the $1 slot machine. "I don't know what I would have done if I would have hit it (the big one)," says

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - A $1.5 million progressive slot machine jackpot at the Showboat Casino-Hotel in Atlantic City raised a few concerns for the grandmotherly 82-year-old winner on March 12. Employees got the winner to sign a release that would allow the casino to use her name and photo for promotional purposes, but she had second thoughts. Susan Tulino, director of public relations, said, "She was concerned her neighbors would find out she was now a multimillionaire." The elderly winner told casino officials, "If you put my name in the paper, all these young gigolos would start calling and asking me out. I think I'm content just staying home with my daughter and my cat." The woman was convinced by friends from her retirement village to come to Atlantic City. While her friends played elsewhere in town, the woman remained loyal to Showboat and the Fabulous '50s machine. After all the excitement of hitting the jackpot, the woman was concerned she'd miss her bus ride back, but Tulino arranged for a limo to take her home. "We gave her a copy of the check," Tulino said of the big check used in promotional photographs. "She was concerned it would not fit in the limo." Her daughter said that when she got home that night, she found her mother at the dining room table with all the lights on. Her daughter asked what was wrong, and was then shown the checks. The winner plans to make a charitable donation and to spend some of her winnings on trips to Hawaii and France.
