Gambling Fever Spreads to Cell Phones

Cell phones are slowly turning into one-armed bandits, a panel at the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA) industry trade show Wireless 2001 was told March 21.

In Germany, cell phone users punch in a few numbers and play the lottery; parlaying a trifecta at the Hong Kong Jockey Club is also only a telephone number away; and in London one of the world's largest online betting companies, Eurobet, offers a tutorial on how to turn a Nokia phone into a betting machine.

Sweden's Net Entertainment, an online casino developer, is launching a wireless casino game for WAP (wireless application protocol)-enabled phones, some of which have already hit the market. And in the United States, a family-owned business in Colorado called wirelesswinnings.com is testing a way to play blackjack and draw poker for cash winnings--all from a cell phone.

More recently, mobile giants Motorola, Ericsson and Siemens have unified their efforts to turn the cell phone into a portable gaming platform. The result is a "universal" (i.e. open) mobile games platform.

The companies will collaborate to define a common set of application programming interfaces (APIs) and a software development kit (SDK). By working together they hope to provide network operators and games developers with the widest possible user base for their services, allowing users of different handsets to compete in multi-player games. Metrowerks, the development software specialist, which provides SDKs for the Palm, Symbian and Java platforms, will also play a key role in producing the relevant APIs and SDK.

The initiative is yet to be formally launched, but Ericsson, Motorola and Siemens hope to have initial specifications by Q3 2001.

"We believe that offering compelling mobile games will act as an effective catalyst for the mobile Internet market as a whole, so we are convinced that operators, as well as the game developing community, will benefit greatly from this initiative," said Jan Lindgren, Vice President of Ericsson Internet Applications.

SAN DIEGO, CA - A San Diego woman celebrated her 40th birthday a week late on March 5, when she won a $290,451 jackpot playing a 25-cent Wheel of Fortune progressive machine at Barona Casino. The Clairemont resident, who wished to keep her last name anonymous, is the sixth person to hit a jackpot higher than $200,000 at Barona Casino since it installed brand new Las Vegas slot machines last July. "It was kind of a fluke that I went to Barona," said Teresa (photo right). "I was thinking about putting in some overtime at my job, but I decided instead to have some fun. I can't believe I almost didn't go to Barona, since I just won more than I would have earned at work over the next few years!" Teresa had been playing Wheel of Fortune, her favorite game, at Barona for a while before moving on to other machines. Right before she left to go home, Teresa was inspired to play Wheel of Fortune one last time. "I had decided I would spend $20 playing Wheel of Fortune and then I would leave. Then when the Wheel of Fortune symbol came up I remember thinking 'That's the progressive!' Then I thought maybe something was wrong - like the machine was broken or something. I was completely overwhelmed and still am." Teresa, who just turned 40 few weeks ago, says that she and her husband plan to buy a house and vacation in Mexico with some of her winnings. "We were thinking about buying a house, but it had been pushed back for 18 months," she said. "Now we are able to put that on the front burner again. This is the best birthday present I've ever had!"

LAS VEGAS, NV - Las Vegas resident Sandra Blumen hit it big when she won $25,000 as part of the "Total Reward's Treasure Hunt" slot promotion March 26 at Rio Suite Casino Resort.

LAS VEGAS, NV - Brian DiCarlo of West Warwick, RI, turned a $10 investment into $111,111 on a quarter Ippy's Fortune slot machine March 25 at Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino.
