Mohegan Sun Tops-Off Connecticut's Newest Arena

Mohegan Sun reached the first significant milestone in the $800 million "Project Sunburst" construction schedule September, 2000 as the final steel beam was placed on the external structure of the new Mohegan Arena - a 10,000-seat facility.

"Project Sunburst" is the largest private development on the East Coast. The 4.9 million sq. ft. expansion is on a 36-month fast-track schedule with an overall completion date of April 2002. The Mohegan Arena is part of Project Sunburst, which also includes the Casino of the Sky and the retail/restaurant podium. All of these elements will open in the fall of 2001, however, due to the size and scope of Project Sunburst, each component has its own time-line for structure through enclosure and its own finish schedule.

With the arena's steel structure and shell completed, Mohegan Sun will focus its efforts on completing the arena's interior over the next year. Upon its completion and grand opening, the Mohegan Arena will host world-class entertainment and sporting events as well as serve

as an exhibition hall for major trade shows and conventions.

Project Sunburst will continue the tradition of Mohegan-themed excellence and will transport patrons from "the earth" to "the sky," and transform the property by creating the premier travel, entertainment, meeting and gaming destination on the East Coast. The expansion includes spectacularly designed and appointed amenities including a 1,200 room, 34-story hotel that features luxury guestrooms and suites; over 100,000 square feet of meeting and function space, including the largest ballroom in the Northeast; the "Sky Casino," which consists of 115,000 square feet of additional gaming space; a 16,000 square foot spa, salon and fitness center; an additional 175,000 square feet of premium retail and entertainment space featuring dozens of fine shops and boutiques in a two-story atrium; a new 10,000-seat arena, and much more.

New Book to Consider: Forever Craps
By Howard Schwartz

Frank Scoblete, who wrote the previously well-received and respected Beat the Craps Out of the Casinos and Guerrilla Gambling, has a new gem for crapshooters, while newcomer John Brokopp has a nice package of information for the beginner who wants to make a small bankroll go a long way in a casino.

Scoblete's Forever Craps (172 pages, paperbound, $13.95) is packed with personal experiences at the crap tables-and geared for the serious, experienced player. Here you won't find the basics. He admits craps is a negative expectation game-but he also says it can be beaten in the long run.

Scoblete is not afraid to be controversial. You may not agree with him all the time, but that's what makes the game interesting-controversy over what are smart bets; where the poor plays are and whether something works or doesn't and why.

For example, early on, he has a small, interesting section titled in part, "How Casinos Psych Right Bettors Into Playing Wrong." He then goes into wrong bets for the wrong player. Later it's "Right Bets for the Wrong Player." He shows the house edge in every example.

He later offers a major section on the Five-Count-calling it a method for deciding "which shooter to bet on" in the real world of casino play. The method includes avoiding horrendous shooters (who seven out early); locating shooters who are "conscious rhythmic rollers," (turning the odds to slightly favor the players); and getting more comps than you usually merit (risking money for two hours but getting a four-hour rating).

Scoblete includes letters from people who have things to contribute; some are skeptical players; others are angry, challenging, sometimes funny. But that's the nature of the game-no one quite agrees on the ONLY way to play. Then there's the somewhat "mysterious" player named The Captain, who Scoblete introduced in his earlier books. We get to know more about him, how he developed his table expertise and strategies in this book.

This is an interesting, new, chock-full-of-ideas effort by Scoblete. It's reasonably priced, easy to read and has an invigorating tone. It gives you plenty to test, experiment with. You'll find yourself underlining or marking certain pages or key points. Enjoy, it's a worthy addition to your craps book library.
