WSOP Europe scheduled for September

London will play host to a European version of the World Series of Poker two months after the conclusion of the 39th annual Las Vegas Series.

The WSOP Europe is a three-event series that begins on Sept. 6 and ends with a $19,600 (10,000 pounds) Main Event. London Clubs International will host the events at their Fifty, Leicester Square, and Sportsman casinos.

Each tournament winner will receive the traditional WSOP gold bracelet.

The bracelet carries the same prestige as the Las Vegas awards, according to WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack. The bracelet design is not finished, but it will have the word "Europe" prominently displayed. All performances in WSOP Europe will count towards overall WSOP records.

"The World Series of Poker Europe will have a unique identity, style and flair, but will remain true to the 38-year tradition and heritage," WSOP commissioner Jeffrey Pollack said in a press release. "This new tournament has been designed with European players in mind, but registrants from every country are welcome."

The WSOP Europe is intended to compliment the American version by running after the summer's American series, Pollack said. Currently, the plan is to have the WSOP Europe follow the Las Vegas tournament on an annual basis.

Unlike the Texas Hold'em heavy Las Vegas WSOP, the European version will prominently feature H.O.R.S.E and pot-limit Omaha in addition to the Main Event.

The H.O.R.S.E. tournament begins on Sept. 6 in the Leicester Square Casino, which officially opens on April 1 and will be the centerpiece of WSOP Europe.

The Pot-Limit Omaha tournament will be played at the Leicester Square Casino on Sept. 8 and the No-Limit Hold'em Main Event is set to start at all three casinos on Sept. 10.


Players will be consolidated on Sept. 13 and play for the WSOP Europe Main Event Championship at the Leicester Square Casino.

Pollack said his office is planning to continue expanding the WSOP brand to other parts of the world, but no definite plans have been announced.

"Our goal is to breathe life into the WSOP brand on a year-round basis," Pollack said. "We are not starting a tour. Our thing has been and always will be, staging ultra prestigious poker events."

 


New Jersey Senate considers
smoking loophole

NEW JERSEY– "As the Senate Health Committee considers closing the loophole which permits smoking on the casino floor today, at least one gaming hall expects to go 100 percent smoke-free.

"The Tropicana Atlantic City would instead create nongaming smoking lounges in various locations throughout its huge casino.

"…An ordinance approved by city council on Feb. 7, and signed into law by Mayor Robert W. Levy, limits smoking to 25 percent of the gaming floor. Temporary partitions must be in place by April 15. Companies have five months from the April date to submit plans to the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs for permanent separations between smoking and nonsmoking areas…"

Texas expanded gambling bills filed

AUSTIN, Texas– "El Paso's Tigua Indians are hoping that lady luck will finally shine on them this year at the Texas Legislature.

"Several bills have been filed by state lawmakers that would allow the Tiguas to resume gambling at their Speaking Rock Casino, including a proposal from one El Paso representative to tie state proceeds from gambling to higher education funding.

"The Tiguas have been looking to reopen Speaking Rock Casino since then-state Attorney General John Cornyn shut it down in 2002.

"Some El Pasoans support opening the casino because it would generate money for the state.

"…This year, state Rep. Norma Chávez, D-El Paso, has proposed a number of measures that would allow federally-recognized Indian tribes to conduct gambling activities. One proposal, which is expected to be heard at a committee hearing on Tuesday, would give those tribes exclusive rights to casino gaming in their counties.

"Also proposing separate legislation aimed at legalizing gambling on tribal lands are Rep. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston, and Rep. Kino Flores, D-Mission.

"Chávez' proposal calls for dedicating 5 percent of gaming revenue to the Texas Grant, a cash-strapped grant program for college students who have a 2.5 grade-point average or higher…"

 


Bill Engvall

The Orleans, Las Vegas, Nev.: Bill Engvall was working as a nightclub DJ in Dallas when he decided to try stand-up comedy. After finding success at several local clubs, he moved to Los Angeles in 1990.

It wasn't long before he found fame as a comedian. In 1992, he was awarded Best Male Stand-up at the American Comedy Awards, and he moved into sitcom TV with an appearance on "Designing Women" and a regular role on "Delta." He also later had a role on "The Jeff Foxworthy Show."

In 1996, Engvall released his debut album, "Here's Your Sign," also the title of his most famed comedy bit. The album was No. 1 on the Billboard Comedy Chart for 15 straight weeks, peaked at No. 5 on Billboard's Current Country Album Chart and spent 17 weeks in the Country Album Top 10.

Collaborating with country artist Travis Tritt on a video also entitled "Here's Your Sign," the single of the same name was ranked No. 1 on Billboard's Country Singles Sales Chart for 10 weeks and reached the Top 30 on the Billboard Singles Sales Chart.

Engvall's album "Dorkfish" followed in 1998, and in 1999 he issued his first seasonal effort, "Here's Your Christmas Album." In mid-2000, Engvall released "Now That's Awesome."

Also in 2000, Engvall joined forces with Jeff Foxworthy, Ron White and Larry the Cable Guy for the country-flavored Blue Collar Comedy Tour, which became wildly popular and spawned a live album and multiple DVDs, as well as a Sirius satellite radio channel called Blue Collar Radio.
