Harrah's To Expand Players Island Casino

METROPOLIS, IL - Harrah's Casino plans a $42 million expansion of Players Island Casino, the property in Southern Illinois that it acquired last year.

Harrah's will add a new riverboat, three new restaurants, an entertainment center and more parking. After the improvements, the riverboat will bear the Harrah's name.

Mike Crider, Players Island Casino vice president and general manager, said that the expansion is expected double the size of the casino's work force and increase business by 20 percent. ''This means more tax revenues for Illinois, Metropolis, and it is good for us, too,'' says Crider.

In September, Harrah's will add another riverboat with more gaming space, state-of-the-art games, a climate-controlled ramp and Harrah's signature restaurants. The casino also will add more parking. The expansion is expected to double the size of the casino's 700-person work force, Crider said.

Fire Break Out at Mississippi Casino - ROBINSONVILLE, MS - A fire broke out May 4 at the Grand Casino and Hotel, sending smoke into the huge gambling hall. There were no reports of injuries.

The fire reportedly started at an entrance to the casino and near the 1,300-room hotel. The Grand Casino is one of 10 located in Tunica County, about 20 miles south of Memphis, TN. The fire was reported about 7 a.m. on May 4 Tunica police officer Roger Goff said early reports were that the casino was evacuated and there were no injuries. The Grand Casino is one of the largest in Tunica County with 2,800 employees and 140,000 square feet of gaming space.
