Luxor Offers All-You-Can-Eat
Bug Buffet
- LAS VEGAS, NV - Where's the best buffet in Las Vegas?
Bats agree its every night at the Luxor
Hotel-Casino. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of bats and
birds fly towards the Luxor's powerful light beam, which
attracts tasty moths, beetles and other bugs.
The
nightly feeding frenzy is so dramatic that motorists sometimes
pull off to the side of Interstate 15 to watch. Brett
Riddle, a biology professor at the University of Nevada,
Las Vegas, says that the bats come from all over town
and even as far as caves in Red Rock Canyon, about 20
miles away. "Those are bats?" asks Rory Higgens incredulously.
"That's trippy. Well, actually, it's kind of disgusting."
The Luxor's beam is the most powerful in the world, bright
enough to be seen on a clear night up to 250 miles away.
"We don't have a position on the bats," says Luxor spokeswoman
Hillary Bernstein. "It's just nature at work. Bats are
attracted to bugs, bugs are attracted to light and we
have the brightest light in the world. Go figure." .
