LISBON, PORTUGAL - A 71-year-old Portuguese woman hit a $1.1 million slot-machine jackpot august 18 at Casino Estoril in seaside suburbs west of Lisbon. "We believe that this is a record for slot machines in Europe,'' casino spokesman Nuno Lima de Carvalho said. The woman, described as single and an occasional visitor to the casino, won while playing a slot machine that was one of 48 linked together at the Estoril site and to 30 at another casino. Winning required the use of three 50-escudo fiches at the same time, the spokesman said. The woman, who requested anonymity, left with a check for $1.1 million (245 million escudos).
