Casino Resorts Extinguish
Lights to Honor National Day of Prayers and Remembrance
-
LAS VEGAS, NV - Observing the National Day of Prayer and
Remembrance, Park Place Entertainment resorts nationwide
and many other major casino/resorts throughout the United
States turned off their famed exterior lights and marquees
on September 14, after sunset.
In
Las Vegas, major hotel casinos and many businesses along
the famed Las Vegas Strip, along with the glittering casino/hotels
that line the downtown area's Fremont Street Experience
and other resorts in the community, extinguished all their
non-essential exterior lighting at 7:45 p.m. on Friday
as an expression of sympathy to those who lost relatives
and friends in the Sept. 11 attack on New York City and
Washington, D.C.
"Here
in Las Vegas, the heart of the casino industry, and throughout
the country, we are turning off our lights in remembrance
of those who lost their lives and as an expression of
support for all who are suffering as a result of the unspeakable
horror that has been visited on our country,'' said Thomas
E. Gallagher, president and chief executive officer of
Park Place. "Our lights are our symbol to the world, and
by turning them off and leaving them off all night, we
demonstrate our support in the most visible way.''
Many
casino companies have joined Park Place in the industry
gesture. Harrah's Entertainment Inc. is extinguishing
their lights at Harrah's resorts throughout the nation
(including Harrah's and the Rio in Las Vegas). In Las
Vegas, the Mandalay group -- which includes Mandalay Bay,
Luxor, Excalibur and Circus Circus -- the Sahara, the
Tropicana, the Aladdin, The Venetian, the MGM/Mirage resorts
(MGM, Bellagio, Mirage, Treasure Island, New York-New
York and Monte Carlo) and the Riviera are among those
participating with Park Place properties. The Fremont
Street Experience group will join in, turning off the
famed lights of Glitter Gulch, as will Coast Resorts and
other well-known casinos.
