Alabama-Coushatta To
Fight For Texas Casino
- HOUSTON, TX - The Alabama-Coushatta Indian tribe of
East Texas plans to open a casino sometime before Christmas,
expecting to fight a legal battle with Texas Attorney
General John Cornyn. Cornyn said he will seek to have
federal courts order the Alabama-Coushatta casino closed,
just as he fought in court to close the Tiguas' Speaking
Rock casino near El Paso. "The law is clear on casino
gambling in Texas," Cornyn said. "It's illegal. The federal
law that granted the Alabama-Coushatta tribes of Texas
federal status specifically states that all gaming activities
prohibited by Texas are prohibited on the reservation."
In a lawsuit filed Wednesday, the tribe argues that there
is no difference between the games it plans to offer at
the casino and the types of gambling that the state offers.
Cornyn's office maintains that while Texas has a lottery
and some other limited gambling, casino-style gambling
is forbidden.
