Casinos Want Lower Admission Requirements for High Rollers

RENO, NV - The Nevada Gaming Control Board endorsed a proposal on December 5 to scale back the minimum bet requirement to $500 in private casino salons dedicated to high rolling gamblers.

Until this year, Nevada required all gambling to be open to the public, but casinos argued that they needed the private salons to attract high-rolling gamblers. The minimum bet in the private rooms started out at $20,000, but was later dropped to $3,000.

Now lawyers for the Nevada Resort Association maintain that a $500 minimum bet requirement will give casinos more flexibility, which they need after the drop in business following the Sept. 11 attacks.

Industry representatives suggest a minimum of $50,000 in cash and credit for admittance to the private salons. However, the board's proposal - which must be approved by the Nevada Gaming Commission - requires a minimum of $1 million in cash and credit for admittance. "The $50,000 line of credit in my opinion didn't identify the high-end gambler," said GCB member Bobby Siller. "I could qualify for that - as a government servant."

Harrah's Drops Energy Surcharges at Nevada Hotels - LOS ANGELES - Harrah's Entertainment Inc. eliminated the energy surcharge at its Nevada casinos on December 10, making it the state's last major casino operator to cancel the unpopular charges begun earlier this year.

The company decided to end the $3-per-room charge in response to falling energy prices, specifically falling prices for natural gas, said spokesman Gary Thompson.

Harrah's and rival operators Park Place Entertainment Corp. and MGM Mirage implemented energy surcharges in the spring after electricity and natural gas prices moved sharply higher during the power crisis in neighboring California. P

ark Place eliminated its $3-per-night charge at its eight Nevada properties in mid-October, and MGM Mirage eliminated a similar charge early last month.

Harrah's operates the Harrah's and Rio resorts in Las Vegas; Park Place operates Paris Las Vegas, Bally's and the Las Vegas Hilton; and MGM Mirage's properties include Bellagio, the Mirage and MGM Grand.
