Finnish Finance Minister To Start New Year Gambling - /M2 Communications/ - Finlands finance minister, Sauli Niinisto, plans to ring in the new year at Casino Ray in Helsinki, where he will gamble using the European Unions new euro coins. About 30 of the 140 slot machines at the state-owned casino will be ready to accept euros when Finland changes from the Finnish mark to the euro on December 31 at midnight. Niinisto will the first person to feed euros into the slot machines. He will then phone his Greek counterpart, Nikos Christodoulakis, to see how the historic euro shift is proceeding in Greece. Finland and Greece will become the first European countries to adopt the euro currency, an hour ahead of most others.

Hawaii Governor Still Supports An Island Casino - Hawaii Governor Ben Cayetano says that West Hawaii is still a prime location for a casino. On December 17, the governor met with neighboring island journalists and discussed the possibility of the Legislature approving a single casino in return for share of the profits. Cayetano favors asking state voters if they would accept a constitutional amendment to allow one casino in Hawaii. "Approving one casino for Hawaii would remove the reasons I oppose gambling in Hawaii," said the governor. "If you go to Las Vegas, you can go to the airport and gamble or play keno at the grocery store; that's what I don't want to see in Hawaii. The Hilton Corporation and Sun International are both interested in running a casino in Hawaii. Earlier this year, Sun International proposed an $800-million casino resort at Ko Olina on Oahu. However, Cayetano says that neither company would necessarily have first choice. If state voters approve a single casino, it would be put out to bid. Cayetano also supports gambling on inter-island cruise ships, as long as they are outside the three-mile limit.
