Fallout Shelter May Become
Exclusive Casino

GREENBRIER, VA--(CASINO WIRE)--Oct. 20, 2000-- Voters in Greenbrier County will decide on November 7 whether to create West Virginia's first casino in a fallout shelter in the Allegheny Mountains.

Decades ago, the government built a fallout shelter in the mountains where members of Congress seek refuge in the event of a nuclear war. Now that the Cold War is over, Greenbrier resort wants to turn the bunker into a chic casino, where guests would pay up to $645 a piece to stay in the best rooms, dine, golf, learn falconry, and of course, gamble in the exclusive casino.

The resort was given control of the shelter in the early 1990s. Resort chief executive Ted Kleisner spent eight years lobbying the Legislature to put the casino plan to voters. He says that the casino will bring year-round employment and 75 new positions. Even though most of Greenbrier County's 35,000 residents couldn't gamble because the casino would be open to resort guests only, the idea of nearby gambling stirs unease.

"Limited gaming is a lie, and you can take that to the bank," says Cleve Benedict, a Republican who served one term in Congress and leads opposition to the measure. But Shirley Lynch, who works at a resort shop, plans to vote yes. "My children won't have a chance to live here and prosper if the Greenbrier closes," she says.

ST. LOUIS, MO -- Isle of Capri has completed the purchase of President's Davenport, IA casino and hotel operations for $58.2 million in cash at an announcement October 10. Isle of Capri plans to rename the property Rhythm City Casino.

A new brand for the Isle of Capri Casinos, Inc., the Rhythm City theme will be launched along with a new vessel for the property, the Treble Clef, formerly the Queen of the Red.

President Casinos, Inc. intends to use the proceeds to pay down debt as part of its plan to restructure its balance sheet.

"I am especially pleased to expand our company into the city of Davenport. This is my hometown area; I take great pride in developing within it a quality entertainment product. We look forward to making the Quad Cities proud to be the birthplace of Rhythm City," said Bernard Goldstein, chairman and chief executive officer of Isle of Capri.


President's Casino was just acquired by Isle of Capri from President's Casino.

"This sale of our Davenport assets is a significant first step toward a major restructuring of the debt of President Casinos," said John S. Aylsworth, president and chief operating officer.
