World
Series of Poker Begins
LAS VEGAS -
Poker's biggest event started April 19 at Binion's
Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas.
World Series
of Poker bosses expect record numbers of professional and amateur
gamblers to enter the 35 separate events over the next five weeks.
Two new contests
were added this year. One, called H.O.R.S.E., is a rotation game
offering alternate rounds of hold'em, Omaha hi-lo, razz, seven-card
stud and seven-card stud hi-lo. The other new contest will be a
match play tournament.
The final tournament
is a $10,000 buy-in, no-limit Texas hold'em event--a five-day battle
for a $1.5-million first prize and the title of world champion.
Tournament coordinator Brian Dziminski said on April 18 that Binion's
added 200 temporary dealers, floor supervisors and registration
clerks to accommodate the event.
We're
optimistic, says Dziminski. The World Series has grown
tremendously over the past few years, and with the changes we've
made, we think it will be bigger and better."
