Argosy Gives Go-Ahead for $105M Casino Expansion - KANSAS CITY, MO - The Argosy Gaming Co. will go ahead with plans to replace the last navigable riverboat casino in the Kansas City market with a landlocked barge.

The Illinois-based company and the Missouri Gaming Commission had approved the $105 million expansion of the Argosy Riverside Casino earlier this year.

But the expansion plan stalled when Missouri Gov. Bob Holden proposed steep increases in casino taxes to balance the state's budget.

"It didn't make sense for us to proceed if we were going to be hit with an onerous tax increase," said Virginia McDowell, an Argosy vice president.

Casino tax increase measures failed to win Legislative approval. And Argosy president Jim Perry last week quietly gave his nod for construction to begin.

A formal groundbreaking ceremony is set for June 26.

Under the plan that the Gaming Commission approved in January, Argosy will replace its three-deck riverboat casino with a one-deck floating barge. The project also will feature more parking, new dining options and a new entrance facade that mimics a 19th century wharf.
