LOS
ANGELES, CA - Official groundbreaking ceremonies were held May
28th for Morongo Casino Resort & Spa, a new resort destination
designed by The Jerde Partnership for the Morongo Band of Mission
Indians. Jerde's design for the high-end resort is inspired
by the project's location at the center of the Morongo Reservation
in California's high desert valley - among jagged mountains,
wind- and water-carved canyons and intense sunshine.
The new
Morongo Casino Resort & Spa, which is nearly four times
larger than the existing Casino Morongo, will brand the destination
as a high-quality, experience-based place and serve as the benchmark
for design and development of the Morongo tribe's continued
diversification. This
site is nestled in one of the world's most awe inspiring natural
wonders. The design vision is integrated with the spectacular
experience already provided by nature. This is truly a demarcation
point for hospitality experience," said Jon Jerde, founder
and chairman of The Jerde Partnership. Jerde Senior Vice President
and Design Principal Tim Magill added, "By focusing on
the dramatic landscape of the Morongo Reservation we are striving
to create a unique place that celebrates the transformative
power of nature - a force that has shaped the striking physical
features of the site and will rejuvenate the people who visit
this place."
Jerde's
design concept for the 660,000 square-foot project, which is
located 90 minutes east of Los Angeles, CA between the picturesque
San Bernardino and San Jacinto mountain ranges, celebrates nature
as a transformative, form-giving force. "The goal of the
tribe is to create a world-class resort that offers visitors
a high-quality experience with a full range of entertainment
and recreation that the entire family will enjoy," said
Maurice Lyons, Morongo tribal chairman. "Jerde's
design concept is both beautiful and unique and will enhance
the paradise of the desert."
Morongo
Casino Resort & Spa is organized into transition, transformation
and oasis zones which feature organic shapes, earthen tones,
landscaping and natural materials. The transition zone extends
from the nearby
10 freeway across the site to the iconic porte cochere. Once
inside, transformation zone begins and stretches

across
the casino to the oasis zone, an outdoor pool area. Framed by
the nearby mountains, the oasis is complete with sandy beaches,
cabanas, a spa and water slide. Similarly, the landscaping,
which is largely drought-tolerant, becomes more lush and abundant
as guests pass through
each zone.
The focal
point of the resort is the grand casino, which will feature
a complete selection of the latest slots and table games. Themed
restaurants, a nightclub, family attractions, and spa facilities
will surround the casino. The hotel tower located just off the
casino floor will consist of 272 standard rooms and 32 double
bay suites offering spectacular views of the mountains and desert
valley. Additional luxury accommodations are provided in six
cassias, each of which has private water features and overlooks
the pool oasis.
Slated to
open in 2004, the new Morongo Casino Resort & Spa, adjacent
to the very popular Desert Hills Outlet Center and landmark
Hadley Fruit Orchards, will provide a year-round travel destination
for the more than 10 million visitors already traveling to the
area. The Morongo Casino Resort & Spa groundbreaking comes
amid a trend by Indian tribal governments across the country
to provide world-class resorts that appeal to a broader range
of travelers in the highly competitive hospitality industry.
Music and entertainment brand Hard Rock Cafe has agreements
with tribes in Connecticut, Florida and Mississippi to target
a
younger clientele.
