Manitoba Casinos May Be Exempt from Smoking Ban - WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Premier Gary Doer has left a door open to allow smoking in casinos after the rest of the city is forced to butt out on July 1. If re-elected, Doer said on May 29th that the NDP will abide by "the spirit" of the city's indoor smoke ban but refused to say whether the province's two casinos would be forced to comply on the same date as the rest of Winnipeg.

The province is not required to follow city bylaws in its buildings, which means the Club Regent and McPhillips Street Station casinos could be exempt from the smoking ban if the government chooses not to follow it. Doer said he will have to discuss the situation with the mayor following the June 3 election.

Louisiana House Approves Slots at Track - BATON ROUGE, LA – Slot machines could be added at New Orleans' horse racing track under legislation approved by the House on May 29th in a 66-31 vote.

The bill by Sen. Lambert Boissiere, D-New Orleans, goes next to Gov. Mike Foster. It was approved by the House with little discussion. It leaves the final decision up to New Orleans voters on whether the Fair Grounds can install 700 of the gambling machines.

Slot machines had been barred from the track because Harrah's Entertainment Inc.'s casino was granted a monopoly on gambling in New Orleans. The two have since cut a deal that would allow the track to add slots.
