Renowned Las Vegas Photographer Recreates
His Famous Photo at Stratosphere Casino
and Hotel

LAS VEGAS - /BUSINESS WIRE/ - Nearly five decades later, history repeats itself when photographer Don English, who made Las Vegas famous with a photo of a floating craps table at the Sands Hotel in 1953, has recreated this photo at the Stratosphere Casino Hotel and Tower. The photo commemorates the completion of a $75 million expansion of Carl Icahn's Las Vegas resort property, which includes a 1,000-room tower, 67,000 square-foot pool complex and new restaurants.

Nearly five decades later photographer Don English recreates his famous 1953 Sands Hotel floating craps table image at the Stratosphere Casino Hotel and Tower to commemorate the completion of a $75 million expansion of Carl Icahn's Las Vegas resort property, which includes a 1,000-room tower, 67,000 square-foot pool complex and new restaurants. The new photograph features Stratosphere hotel guests, employees as well as dancers and principal performers from the Stratosphere's American Superstars show re-creating the poses of the 1953 photograph. The photograph will eventually go on display at the new "vintage Vegas''-themed Lucky's Cafe alongside hundreds of vintage photographs from Las Vegas' heyday of the 1950s and 1960s, many of which were taken by English, an award-winning former Las Vegas News Bureau photographer.

The craps table was lowered into the pool by hand and supported on a series of plexiglass tubes. The models and the gaming chips were modeled using the original photo. To recreate the shot, English used a Super Wide Hasselblad with a 40 mm lens. The original photo was taken with a 4x5 Speed Graphic camera. More than 80 shots were taken from various angles to ensure the closest recreation possible.

Besides the pool and recreation deck and Lucky's Cafe, the $75 million expansion includes a 1,000-room tower, The Courtyard Buffet, a casino remodel, The Crazy Armadillo Oyster Bar and 3,606-seat Outdoor Events Center.

Stratosphere is an integrated casino/hotel/entertainment complex located at the north end of the Las Vegas Strip. Highlighted by the 1,149-foot Stratosphere Tower, the tallest free standing observation tower in the United States, Stratosphere features 2,444 guest rooms and suites; an expansive 80,000-square-foot casino offering the best odds in Las Vegas; uniquely themed restaurants; The Tower Shops at Stratosphere; the destination Big Shot and High Roller thrill rides; and the popular American Superstars and Viva Las Vegas productions. Carl Icahn is the principal owner of the Stratosphere Casino Hotel and Tower and both Arizona Charlie's gaming properties in Las Vegas.
