ATLANTIC CITY, NJ -- Park Place Entertainment Corp. asked New Jersey gaming regulators on September 23 for permission to merge the Claridge Casino Hotel and Bally's Atlantic City. The resort, which would keep the name Bally's Atlantic City, would be among the biggest in Atlantic City, with 222,337 square feet of gaming space and 1,753 rooms. Park Place Chief Operating Officer Wallace R. Barr said the merger is an attempt to "streamline operations and better allocate our resources." In July, Park Place physically connected the two casinos with the Gateway, a $25 million bridge that features a ballroom and 10,000 square feet of retail space. The New Jersey Casino Control Commission must approve the merger. Park Place bought the Claridge, a Depression-era landmark, for $65 million in June 2001. The Claridge had filed for bankruptcy in 1999. The company also owns two other Atlantic City casinos, the Caesars Atlantic City and the Atlantic City Hilton. Park Place
owns, manages or has an interest in 29 gambling properties operating
under the Caesars, Bally's, Paris, Flamingo, Grand Casinos and
Hilton brand names. |
