UNCASVILLE,
CT - Mohegan
Sun unveiled the first phase of its $1 billion "Project Sunburst''
expansion, the largest private development
project on the East Coast on September 25.
The doors of
the Casino of the Sky, the 115,000-square-foot centerpiece of the
expansion, were opened one week ahead of schedule, following a ceremony
featuring a traditional tribal blessing and a speech from Mark Brown,
Mohegan Tribal Chairman. Making a special appearance was Connecticut
Governor John Rowland. A crowd of thousands rushed in to experience
the new Mohegan
Sun casino along with The Shops at Mohegan Sun.
"The opening
of Project Sunburst marks a new beginning in East Coast entertainment,''
said Mark Brown, Chairman of The Mohegan Tribe. "The addition of
the Casino of the Sky, The Shops at Mohegan
Sun, 10,000-seat Mohegan
Sun Arena and 300-seat Cabaret places Mohegan Sun on the map
of the most magical entertainment destinations in the world. Visitors
may be drawn to Mohegan Sun for the gaming, but they will want to
stay to enjoy gourmet meals, big name concerts and upscale shopping,
among other world-class amenities,'' he added.
The Casino of
the Sky adds more tables, thousands of slots, a 3,000- square-foot
high-limit lounge, Keno (coming in Spring 2002) and special non-
smoking gaming areas. In addition to the gaming, Mohegan Sun's themed
casino features a planetarium dome, which projects changing displays
of constellations, sun cycles and stirring clouds. Wombi Rock, an
amazing three-story crystal mountain built inside the casino, is
crafted from more than 12,000 individual plates of onyx and alabaster
fused to glass. It serves as a three-level nightclub and bar. Just
steps away from Wombi Rock is an 85-foot-high indoor waterfall,
which also dazzles the eye and senses, while paying tribute to the
journey of the tribe from upstate New York.
Shoppers can
find a tremendous variety of superior brands and specialty gifts,
from fine apparel, antiques and jewelry to custom furniture and
crafts from the Orient. New retail outlets, located in The Shops
at Mohegan Sun, include Brookstone, Cache, Discovery Channel, Godiva
